Mavis Germaine Anderson was born on May 13, 1953 to the late Sgt. Major (USMC-Retired) Walter
Anderson Jr. and Catherine Warren Anderson of Kinston, NC.
Mavis attended Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic School and graduated from Kinston High School.
She was awarded B.A. degree in English and Creative Writing with a minor in Afro American Studies
from Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. After graduation, she worked at IBM in Fishkill, New
York. She also worked at Neuse Enterprises as a Compensatory Education Teacher.
She was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in screenwriting from the American
Film Institute (AFI) in Los Angeles, California. After graduation, she worked as a Script Reviewer at
DefJam Pictures.
After returning to North Carolina, she briefly worked as a Scorer/Reader at NCSU.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, listening to old school R&B music, New York Times crossword
puzzles, watching NFL games, NBA games, and tennis matches, and playing the piano.
She leaves to cherish her memories: mother, Catherine Warren Anderson; sister, Michelle L. Anderson;
sister-in-law, Arementa M. Anderson; nephew, Tremayne L. Anderson (Annette); niece, Tamisha M.
Norman (Lamont); great nieces Kierra Anderson, Nia Anderson, Anaiya Hairston, and Zuri Norman; great
nephew, Ari Norman; great-great niece, Everly Featherstone; a host of other relatives and close friends.
Miss Anderson traded her earthly tent for her eternal home early Friday morning, November 17, 2023 at her residence.
A Life Celebration for Miss Mavis Anderson will be conducted 1:00PM Saturday, November 25, 2023 at St. Peter Church of Christ - DOC with Reverend Teddra Smith officiating.
